The day of arrival

Into the Arctic by Sea

Arrival in Kirkenes and transfer to the harbour, where the famous Hurtigruten is waiting for us. From here, we begin a calm and scenic voyage around the eastern tip of Finnmark, passing the East Cape along the way. After approximately four hours, we arrive in Vardø — a historic island town located as far east as Istanbul, and a place where life has always been shaped by the sea. A warm dinner awaits at our accommodation, right in the heart of town.

King Crab and the Barents Sea

After breakfast, freshly prepared and served by the owner, your private boat is waiting at the quay. This beautiful 70-foot wooden vessel, once used for fishing and Arctic hunting in the 1950s, takes us out onto the Barents Sea to haul in king crab pots. King crab is one of the region’s great delicacies and can only be experienced like this in Eastern Finnmark. Light refreshments are served on board, and back at the harbour we prepare and enjoy the catch in the traditional way.

Famous Bird Cliffs and visitting Hornøya

Journey to the world-famous bird cliffs of Hornøya aboard Tanahorn, a comfortable covered boat designed to keep you sheltered from the Arctic wind and weather.
Just a short boat ride from Vardø lies Hornøya, Norway’s easternmost island and one of the country’s most extraordinary wildlife destinations. Home to hundreds of thousands of seabirds during the nesting season, the island offers a rare opportunity to experience Arctic nature at close range.

After landing on Hornøya, your guide will lead you along the island’s trails and share fascinating stories about the wildlife, history, and unique environment that make this place so special.

Journey from Vardø to Cape East and Sámi Land

After breakfast in Vardø, we leave the island through the undersea tunnel and continue onto the mainland. Here, we set out on skis or snowshoes towards Cape East (Østkapp), Norway’s easternmost point on the mainland, surrounded by the dramatic winter landscape of the Varanger Peninsula.

After our winter excursion, we continue by minibus towards Tana and into Sámi land. Along the way, we visit a Sámi family involved in modern reindeer herding, meet their reindeer and gain an insight into Sámi culture, traditions and everyday life in the north.

A light meal is served along the way. In the evening, we arrive in Tana at our next destination — a beautifully restored former Sea Sámi boarding school, the last of its kind. This unique place will be our base camp for the days ahead and will also serve as a kind of school, where learning and experience go hand in hand. We end the day with a warm serving of bidos, a traditional Sámi reindeer stew.

Dogsledding Across the Arctic Silence

We begin the day enjoying the peaceful morning atmosphere by the fjord, just outside the school, before exploring the surrounding area on snowshoes. Later, we prepare for a mountain adventure by dog sled. Our local musher is one of the region’s most experienced and keeps a large kennel of eager dogs.
Before setting off, you will learn how to drive your own sled, while others ride as passengers and can switch along the way. The two to three-hour journey includes a stop by a mountain lake and a traditional Sami hut.
The mountain views, stretching all the way to the open sea, are unforgettable.
Back at base camp, a warm dinner awaits. In the evening, you can relax in the sauna and, if conditions allow, watch the Northern Lights dance overhead.

Exploring the Tana Fjord and Luovttat, The Pebble Beach

Journey by boat along the Tana Fjord, one of the largest fjords in Finnmark, through a remote coastal landscape shaped by the sea and generations of life in the far north. Along the way, we pass small communities and abandoned settlements, offering a glimpse into a quieter side of Arctic Finnmark.

We go ashore for lunch at Luovttat, the remarkable pebble beach whose Sámi name simply means “the pebble beach”. Here, countless smooth stones in an extraordinary variety of colours line the shore, shaped and polished by the Arctic sea. It is a beautiful place to experience the stillness and raw character of the Tana coast.

One Last Arctic Morning

Wake up to one last morning in Arctic Finnmark. After breakfast, there is time to take in the landscape and the quiet surroundings before we begin our journey back to Kirkenes Airport. Seven days of Arctic nature, local encounters and unforgettable experiences come to an end – but hopefully, Finnmark stays with you long after you leave.
