Exploring the Barents Sea by Boat – on Vardø’s Doorstep

Vardø lies at the very edge of the Barents Sea, surrounded by islands, straits and open water. From here, we set out to explore the island landscape around the town – searching for life both above and below the surface.
We navigate between islands, the mainland and dramatic cliffs, keeping watch for whales, seals and the rich birdlife for which the area is known. What we encounter along the way varies with the season, weather and conditions at sea. No two trips are ever quite the same – out here, nature decides what the day will bring.

In Search of Life at Sea
Fishing equipment is provided on board, and along the way we try our luck at fishing. We also set out to catch king crab, one of the most iconic delicacies from the waters off Finnmark.
The aim is to bring the day’s catch back to shore, where it is prepared and becomes part of our meal. From sea to plate – it doesn’t get much fresher than this.

A Detour into Persfjorden
When conditions allow, we also make a detour into Persfjorden. From the sea, we can see the distinctive rock formations that characterise the area, with striking layers, colours and patterns visible in the cliffs.
