From Vardø to Hamningberg – The End of Europe

From Vardø, we set course for Hamningberg aboard Tanahorn, a comfortable boat with a heated cabin and sheltered seating. When conditions allow, there is ample opportunity to step out on deck to enjoy the scenery, take photographs and experience the landscape up close.

Along the coast, dramatic cliffs and striking rock formations meet the open Barents Sea. Varanger is internationally known for its rich Arctic birdlife, and we keep watch for birds, seals, whales and other wildlife. Every journey is unique, shaped by the season, weather, light and nature itself.

Hamningberg – at the End of Europe

We go ashore in Hamningberg, the historic fishing village at the edge of the Barents Sea, often referred to as “The End of Europe.”

Settlement here dates back to the 16th century. For centuries, people lived from the sea in this remote and weather-beaten place until Hamningberg ceased to be a year-round community in the 1960s.

Hamningberg also holds a special place in Finnmark’s history. While much of the region was destroyed during the Second World War, the village was spared. Its preserved buildings offer a rare glimpse of the fishing communities that once lined the Finnmark coast.

We visit Pakkhuskaia Café, set in a former warehouse where local history and coastal culture remain alive. After a meal prepared with local ingredients, we return to Vardø.
